| Considering Adobe had no central stand of their own, InDesign managed a reasonable impact. Ascent Systems showed how the basic system has been expanded for forms design by their development partner Sansui. Sansui have products such as SmartProperty and SmartCars developed for newspaper advertising workflows through the web. These use the XML links with InDesign and Quark and the creation of PDF files. Ascent are now working on similar ideas for general printing. The website for Printlink will explain this but was not very developed at the time of IPEX.
There will be a Quark version of the forms design later but it seems possible that InDesign has some advantages from a development point of view. Printweek's IPEX Magazine stated that 'InDesign has yet to make much of a dent in the core user base of Quark XPress'. However it may appeal to new users or people who already have new hardware. There is enough support for InDesign for people to feel they have a choice and the situation should allow for rapid developments with XML and PDF. |
