Introduction

"2004" is closer than Drupa

"Watford" is an imagined destination for the UK printing industry where everything is delivered as the customer expects. (See previous comments for reference to the computing industry, Memphis and Cairo.)
Currently it exists only as a probablity table.

Instead of a full introduction, below is a recent comment. "Watford" will become a reality as part of network publishing.

The Adobe concept of 'Network Publishing' started as a description of a global market in 2004. The rates of growth have been amended as the internet has stabilised. However the technical development may stay the same. Several Adobe products are likely to be updated towards the end of 2003. Bandwidth may not have become as widely available as expected. However DVD is an alternative for digital publishing. How 'Network Publishing' is regarded in 2004 will depend on perceptions as well as the technology available from Adobe and others. There are signs that in the UK, hard copy publishing is ready to assume a digital approach and this will be a base for other approaches.

In November, Digital Print World will have support from the BPIF, BAPC and the organisers of IPEX. It seems to be promoted as a sort of 'digital printing for the terrified', starting with the question of whether digital printing is 'a threat or an opportunity'. By November the people actually there will presumably have moved on a bit. In October the Digital Solutions event will extend to cover litho printing as well as workflows for digital.Last year the Digital Ad Lab hosted a meeting on the Job Definition format from CIP4. Discussion could move on from this. Agfa will be covering PDF workflows as well as wide format inkjets. The Acrobat User Forum will look at Acrobat 6 aspects including new pre-press features and server software for forms and data.

The Job Definition Format is now much better accepted as an idea to look at in detail. Printweek reported in detail on the discussion at the Seybold Seminars PDF summit in Amsterdam. Printing World also covered the PDF discussion so the links are becoming clearer. There is still an open question on whether the JDF XML should be stored as part of the PDF. Presumably Adobe will make more information available on the new server software and Transit. There may be more information at Seybold San Francisco as Adobe regard this as a national event for the US.

The Seybold Amsterdam event was not just a transfer of a US discussion. Many of the speakers were based in Europe where the software support for PDF has included hard copy in the scope. The web was considered as support for workflows.'Network Publishing' includes documents in organisations and links with forms and data. This will involve a new audience but the existing PDF audience need the same functions for Job Ticket information. Whether through websites or events such as Seybold, this will become better known in the UK.

The Job Definition Format will be demonstrated at Drupa 2004 in May. This will be working examples, for example at Print City and the Heidelberg stand. Coverage has already started. For example Image Reports have noted the Xerox plans for the largest area yet to feature digital print. Through the web and other events, the background theory for Drupa will be availabl during 2003. The nature of print within network publishing is already taking shape.
